UK Women in Fisheries Launch New Icons Celebrating Diversity of Job Roles in the Seafood Sector

UK Women in Fisheries is proud to unveil a set of newly designed icons that celebrate the incredible women working across the seafood sector. Thanks to vital funding from FaSS, UK WIF collaborated with an experienced designer to develop these powerful symbols, which highlight the diversity of job duties and the strength of women in fisheries.

These striking icons, set against a bold purple background - the proud colour of feminism with history in the women’s suffrage movement - feature a vibrant yellow from the UK WIF brand palette; colours that happily remind us of the sunshine and optimism.

Each icon represents women across a variety of roles in the sector, with subtle, watermarked art work in the background representing the tools, products and symbols of the trade, such as boats, nets, gloves and, of course, lots of fish woven into the design.

A key aspect of this design is its intentional inclusivity. The icons depict a racially ambiguous woman, ensuring representation for all, and crucially, the image of the same woman appears across every job role. This powerful statement reinforces the idea that all women in fisheries, regardless of background, are equally capable of occupying any position, and indeed, many women working in small-scale fisheries do perform many of these duties (if not all!)

We’re proud to share these new icons as a celebration of women’s contributions to the sector. You’ll likely see this new art work across many UK WIF channels, including on social media, website, promotional materials and events.

Anybody is welcome to proudly wear these new icons on our from Teemill , where WIF branded items such as t-shirts, sweatshirts, and notebooks are available to buy, and proceeds go towards supporting UK WIF operations.

The feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive. The UK Women in Fisheries Management Committee have praised the striking colours and the decision to use the same image of the same woman across all six icons. This consistency reinforces the message that women belong in every sector of the fisheries industry.
