Women fishers platform relaunched

The European Network of Women Working in Fisheries and Aquaculture (AKTEA) was relaunched at the end of February, renewing support for the vital and often unrecognised work of women in the industry.

Meeting in Brussels, Belgium, the two-day event was attended by over 30 women from different countries across Europe, including Spain, Croatia, France, Italy, Ireland, Cyprus, Malta and the Netherlands.

Participants at the event discussed how to organise women in fisheries at the European level, what the objectives for the network should be, and how to push for better recognition of women in fisheries across the continent.

The meeting highlighted that women in European fisheries face similar challenges to those experienced in the UK, providing an opportunity to learn from other countries and places.

The Women in Fisheries project will remain involved with AKTEA, scoping out opportunities to achieve shared goals and learn from how other countries improve situations for women across their own fishing and aquaculture sectors.

We also want to take this opportunity to thank Marja Bekendam, the outgoing Chairperson of AKTEA and member of the Women in Fisheries project steering group, for her support and willingness to share her expertise. We wish you all the best for the future.
