Under the Surface - Partners of Commercial Fishermen Mental Health and Wellbeing Survey

The mental health and wellbeing of those working in, or connected to, the fishing industry is an area that’s often overlooked especially when it comes to the partners and families of those working in the catching sector. That’s why we’ve launched this first-of-its-kind survey: to hear directly from those who support the industry behind the scenes.

🧠 What is the survey about?
This survey is part of a research project designed and created by Countryside Community Research Institute (CCRI) and UK Women in Fisheries (UKWIF), exploring the mental and emotional wellbeing of partners of commercial fishermen. We're interested in understanding the unique challenges and pressures faced by women whose contributions play vital roles in the economic viability of fishing businesses whether paid or unpaid; from emotional strain and isolation to financial uncertainty and work-life balance.

Why it matters
By gathering this data, we can begin to build a clearer picture of how life in and around the fishing industry impacts wellbeing. These insights will help us to inform support services, guide policy, and ensure that the wellbeing needs of fishing communities are not overlooked.

📊 What will the data be used for?
This survey will help highlight where support is most needed. From improved access to mental health services to targeted community initiatives, this data can help us to advocate for real change. The more voices we hear, the stronger the case we can make for meaningful investment in wellbeing across coastal communities.

🔍 Just the beginning
This survey is one strand of what we hope will become a much wider piece of research. In time, we want to deep-dive into the experiences and learn more about the wellbeing of women across all parts of the fisheries sector— whether on the water, in the factory, managing logistics, or selling fish. This is about building a more complete picture of the people who keep the sector going — and making sure their wellbeing is front and centre.

📣 Take the survey and share it
If you are the partner of someone working in commercial fishing (or know someone who is), we’d love to hear from you. The survey is completely anonymous and takes around 10-15 minutes to complete. Your experience matters — and your voice could help improve lives.
