How to get involved in 2024
A community of over 100 strong
Happy New Year to all of our members across the UK! We wanted to start the year by taking a moment to look at where we’ve come from, and our ambitious plans for the future. Behind the scenes, we've been applying for funding to continue our crucial work in connecting women and supporting them to thrive.
UK Women in Fisheries is a network of women from all corners of the UK’s fishing industry – boat owners, managers, fishers, sellers, processors, environmental ambassadors, charity leads and trainers. We're a community of over 170 strong and we feel very proud of our crew.
Where have we come from?
Our story began as a research project, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, to illuminate the often 'invisible' roles of women in the UK fishing industry. Led by Dr Madeleine Gustavsson, we explored the lives of women from fishing families, entrepreneurs in the sector, those involved in fish processing, and those working onboard fishing vessels. The research confirmed that women's roles in fisheries are not only diverse but also vital for the sustainable future of fishing. Our video below explains more…
When the research project came to an end in 2021, funding from the Seafarers’ Charity enabled us to continue our mission to amplify the voices of women in fisheries.
Where are we heading?
Now, our focus is on supporting women like you to build your career and inspire the next generation to join us. Our new management committee includes 14 amazing women and represents every corner of the UK’s fishing industry! This year we’ll share events, networking opportunities, resources, stories and support to help you succeed in your role. Sign up to our newsletter to keep in touch.
‘We’re not just an organisation. We’re a community that celebrates, problem-solves and supports women across the whole fishing industry. Get in touch to join us.’ - Clare Leverton, Co-director of UK Women in Fisheries
